A "Space Patrol!" Special for the People of Japan

"My Favorite Things"
In July 1966, John Coltrane and his ensemble, consisting of 'Trane and Pharoah Saunders on saxes and percussion, Alice Coltrane on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Rashied Ali on drums flew to Tokyo, Japan.  Two full performances were recorded for Japanese radio.
Clocking in at 57 minutes, the performance of Rogers & Hammerstein's "My Favorite Things" - long a signature piece for Coltrane by then - was far too long to be presented in one piece on vinyl LP.  Reissued in 1991 by Impulse! Records/MCA, listeners could appreciate this milestone performance complete for the first time.
The performance has an intense devotional quality typical of Coltrane, opening with an extended bass solo by Garrison which showcases his phenomenal ability in a way no brief studio recording ever could.
Join "Space Patrol!" and DJ Carl Howard this Saturday at 4 pm Pacific Time both to hear this legendary recording, and to support the people of Japan in their time of unprecedented national emergency.
