Join Switched On Audrey and Josh Mancell for "Tropicalia" a Brazilian Psychedelic trip only on Pretty World Sunday the 23rd at 2 p.m. (pst) The 'Tropicalia' music of the late '60s and early '70s, in many ways, followed the trends of the UK and US: protest songs, psychedelic experimentation, a hippy return to strumming and shouting, heavy rock-glam and so on. Yet, distinct elements of traditional Brazilian culture were embedded (both sincerely and ironically) within the Tropicalia movement creating a unique musical world cohabited by the old and new - and also its fair share of controversy.

Alas, the military dictatorship which ruled Brazil from the mid-60s until the mid-80s made it much harder for these (r)evolutions to take place. Nonetheless, Brazilian artists such as Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Gal Costa, Tom Ze and Os Mutantes fiercely made their indelible contributions to modern pop music and remain hugely influential and successful worldwide.
