Kerouac’s s Birthday with March 11 Beat Bash
He would have been 88. He may be gone, but tonight, Thursday, March 11, author Jack Kerouac and the ’50s Beat movement he begat are treated to a live, 21-gun salute, courtesy of LuxuriaMusic’s Atomic Cocktail program, 5-6 p.m. at www.luxuriamusic.com. DJ host Vic Tripp promises that ‘We Got the Beats’ will be a finger-snapping howl of a show, featuring not just Kerouac reading his own poetry, but also Beat bits from Gregory Corso and Jack Hammer, faux-Beat musical oddities from Edd “Kookie” Byrnes, Rod McKuen and Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs, plus vintage commercials and satirical send-ups by Stan Freberg and others. “The musical content,” explains Tripp, “will be 75% Beat and Beat-related,” with the remainder comprising the usual Atomic Cocktail menu of “soul and rock that do not stop.” For the occasion, the program’s popular Action House Chat-room is being completely refurbished with bead curtains, wine-bottle candles and a temperamental espresso machine.
